Aim

This history pack, aims to support teachers in developing KS2 learners' knowledge and understanding of everyday life in medieval Wales.

Looking in particular at Princess Gwenllian, Princess Nest, Gerald of Wales, Llywelyn the Great, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, and Owain Glyndŵr, the resources should support schools in addressing the kinds of historical skills and ideas referred to in History in the National Curriculum, and the recommendations set out in the Donaldson Review of the curriculum. In particular, the resources focus on promoting:

  • learners' understanding of famous people, such as Gwenllian and Llewelyn the Great;
  • learners' historical skills of chronological awareness, interpretations of history, historical enquiry and communication and organisation;
  • learners’ skills in literacy, numeracy, thinking and digital competence;
  • learners’ knowledge and understanding of the Cwricwlwm Cymreig and of Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC), including citizenship and well-being; and
  • opportunities for assessment for learning, by providing challenging, stimulating and relevant historical activities.
